Oga Namahage

9th-11th February 2018

Oga Namahage in February, is a smaller version of the festival held on New Year's Eve where demons, called "namahage", visit the city making noise and search for crying children or children who disobey their parents. Parents willingly invite the demons (who scare their children) into their houses as a warning to be a good child. The festival includes stalls serving food and drink, a bonfire, and a namahage Japanese drum show where namahage play traditional drums called "taiko". The namahage descend a snowy forested mountain holding flaming torches and walk through the crowd, trying to intimidate people and, in particular, scare children.
