Kariwano Tug-of-War

10th February 2018

The two sides of town go head-to-head during this festival! Shimo-cho and kami-cho engage in an intense bout of tug-of-war (tsunahiki); however, it's not just your average tug-of-war. Two giant ropes, weighing over 10 tons each, are joined together to form one whole rope spanning over 200 metres. Kariwano Tug-of-War is held annually with the belief that the result of the battle will determine the rice harvest for each year.

Visitors are welcome to join in and are often recruited by members of each side before the event starts. If you plan to go, make sure you dress with weather conditions in mind.
